Dr. Eduardo dela Cruz Retires from the LWM
Dr. Ed dela Cruz officially retired are the Chief of the Vivarium Branch on March 31,
2008 after 42 years of service. A farewell gala was celebrated with the LWM staff on
March 28. Dr. dela Cruz has been a part of numerous research studies and
co-authored many papers. He will continue to serve as a Senior Consultant to the
LWM. We wish him well in his retirement years.

The Cebu Skin Clinic sees on average one new case of leprosy each day. Many of
these new cases are children who desperately need the cure for leprosy. It costs just

LWM Celebrates 80 years of Service
This year the LWM celebrates its 80th Anniversary. The LWM was begun in 1928 and
was dedicated to the memorial of General Leonard Wood, who was the first Governor
General of the Philippines to take an interest in the plight of leprosy patients. A
celebration will take place in Cebu in October. Watch here for more details.

Cebu Skin Clinic (CSC) Serves Over 8,200 Patients Last Year
The CSC in Cebu City did more than 8,200 skin consultations in 2007 and diagnosed
173 new cases of leprosy. The CSC serves mostly the poor population of the City of
Cebu and surrounding areas. The staff serve patients on a daily basis in the clinic as
well as travel out doing field visits in patient homes. Of the 173 new cases of leprosy,
15  were children. The CSC also has 854 patients enrolled in leprosy related studies.

New Assistant Director for LWM Cebu

Dr. Marivic Balagon has been appointed the new Assistant Director for the Leonard
Wood Memorial, Cebu. The appointment was made as of January 1, 2008 by President
and CEO, Christopher J. Doyle. Dr. Balagon has been with the LWM since October,
1990. Since 2006 she has been the Chief of the Cebu Skin Clinic. Dr. Balagon has
extensive experience in Dermatology, Leprosy Research, and Leprosy Control
programs. She has authored and co-authored numerous papers. We welcome her to
the LWM Senior Leadership Team.
